About this species
The eastern woolly lemur is a small, nocturnal primate endemic to the rainforests of eastern Madagascar. It has dense, woolly grey-brown fur, large reflective eyes adapted for night vision, and a relatively short snout. It is typically found in pairs or small family groups and feeds primarily on leaves, buds & bark.
Dense primary & secondary rainforests along the eastern coast of Madagascar, typically at low to mid elevations, where it shelters in tree forks & dense foliage during the day.

Nocturnal surveys after dusk are essential, as this species is strictly night-active. The wet season between November & April tends to coincide with increased activity & feeding, making it the most productive time of year for sightings in Madagascar.
Use a red-filtered torch to locate & observe the species without disturbing it, as their eyes reflect light well in the dark. A fast lens with a wide aperture such as f/2.8 is essential for capturing sharp images in low-light forest conditions. Slow, deliberate movements are key to avoiding startling the animal, which can freeze in place offering a brief but usable shooting window.
