Emerald Toucanet Photography Holidays

Aulacorhynchus prasinus

Explore our Emerald Toucanet photography holidays in Costa Rica, shaped around patient, repeatable field sessions with this species during the fruiting season from late dry season into the wet season - roughly March through July across much of their Central American range. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Emerald Toucanet is a small, vibrant toucan found across the highlands of Central & South America, recognised by its striking green plumage & distinctive large bill marked with yellow, black & chestnut colouring. It typically measures around 30-35 cm in length & is a social species often seen in small flocks moving through the forest canopy. Its loud, repetitive calls make it easier to locate despite its green colouring blending well with foliage.

Habitat

Cloud forests & humid montane forests at elevations of 1,000-3,000 metres, particularly in areas with dense canopy & abundant fruit-bearing trees across Central America & the Andes.

Best time

Early morning between 6am & 9am offers the best light & peak activity, particularly during the fruiting season from late dry season into the wet season - roughly March through July across much of their Central American range.

Approach

Position yourself near fruiting trees at forest edges where Emerald Toucanets regularly feed, as this gives you predictable subjects in good light. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture sharp detail on the bill & plumage without disturbing the bird. Set a fast shutter speed of 1/800s or higher to freeze movement as these birds shift position frequently & can take flight suddenly.

Trips featuring Emerald Toucanet

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Emerald Toucanet A cloud-forest jewel & the characteristic toucan of Costa Rica’s highland forests, the Emerald Toucanet is a small, brilliantly green bird with a contrasting dark bill edged in yellow & a rich chestnut undertail that adds warmth to an otherwise verdant palette. It is often the first toucan species encountered by photographers on cloud-forest excursions, travelling in pairs through cool morning mist along flowering edges at elevations where its lowland cousins cannot follow. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens encounters the Emerald Toucanet on cloud-forest extensions & highland transects, particularly in the Talamanca highlands & around the Cerro de la Muerte corridor. At garden feeders in cloud-forest lodges it can be extremely tame, allowing intimate close-focus compositions that reveal the texture of the matte-green plumage. Photography Technique & Gear The saturated green plumage demands careful white balance in the cool, filtered light of cloud forest. A slight warming of white balance (200-300 K above the auto setting) prevents the bird looking cold & bluish in post-processing. A 300-500mm zoom handles the working distances comfortably; composing against a shaded forest interior background makes the green plumage lift without competing with the background colour. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Emerald Toucanet is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Emerald Toucanet in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Emerald Toucanet is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, & Fiery-throated Hummingbird. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
