Species profile

About this species

The Great Kiskadee is a large, strikingly coloured flycatcher found across much of Latin America & the southern the United States. It is instantly recognisable by its bold black & white head pattern, bright yellow underparts, and rich rufous-brown wings & tail. It is a highly vocal & confident bird, often perching prominently while calling its loud, distinctive kiskadee cry.

Habitat

Great Kiskadees favour open & semi-open habitats including forest edges, riparian woodland, gardens, parks, & scrubland near water. They are highly adaptable & are commonly found in urban & suburban environments as well as along rivers & streams.

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Early morning light provides the best conditions, when the bird is most active & the warm golden light enhances its vivid yellow & rufous plumage. The species is resident year-round across most of its range, so there is no single optimal season, though the breeding period brings increased territorial & display behaviour.

Approach

Position yourself near water or fruiting trees where kiskadees regularly hunt & feed, as this greatly increases your chances of close encounters. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the bird's frequent sudden dives & movements. Take advantage of the species' bold, inquisitive nature - it often perches in the open for extended periods, giving you time to compose well-framed shots.

Trips featuring Great Kiskadee

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Great Kiskadee One of the most distinctive & vocal birds of the Costa Rican countryside, the Great Kiskadee is a large flycatcher with a bold black-&-white striped head, vivid yellow breast, & rusty wings – a combination that makes it instantly recognisable from a distance. It is also extraordinarily approachable: a bird of open edge habitats, gardens, & riverbanks that perches prominently on wires & fence posts & seems barely aware of human presence. Its loud, emphatic “kiskadee” call announces its presence long before it is seen. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographers encounter the Great Kiskadee at virtually every lodge & lowland stop on its Costa Rica itineraries, from garden borders to waterway edges where the species dives for small fish & tadpoles. It frequently perches at eye level & holds position for extended periods – making it an excellent subject for behaviour sequences. Photography Technique & Gear A 200-400mm focal length is sufficient for most Kiskadee encounters given how closely the bird allows approach. Expose for the yellow breast, which can blow in strong midday light; overcast mornings give the most balanced exposures. Look for active behaviour – diving, calling, prey in bill – rather than settling for passive perch portraits. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Great Kiskadee is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Great Kiskadee in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Great Kiskadee is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, & Emerald Toucanet. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
