About this species
The Green Iguana is a large, arboreal lizard native to Central & South America, as well as parts of the Caribbean. Despite its name, its colouring can range from bright green to brown or even orange depending on age, location & health. It is a herbivorous species that spends much of its time basking in the tree canopy alongside rivers & other water sources.
Tropical & subtropical rainforests, woodland edges & riverbanks across Central & South America & the Caribbean, where iguanas favour tall trees overhanging water.

Early morning during the dry season, typically November to April, when iguanas emerge to bask in the first sunlight of the day, making them easier to locate & photograph against warm, golden light.
Position yourself at eye level with the iguana to achieve a more natural & engaging perspective, as shooting downward can flatten the image. Use a telephoto lens of at least 200mm to avoid disturbing the animal & to compress the background foliage into pleasing colour. Prioritise a fast shutter speed of 1/500s or above when the iguana is active, but take advantage of basking periods for sharper, more detailed shots.
