Species profile

About this species

The giant jumping rat is the largest rodent native to Madagascar, resembling a small rabbit with its large ears & long hind legs. It is strictly nocturnal & lives in burrows within the dry deciduous forests of western Madagascar. This endangered species is monogamous, which is unusual among rodents, & pairs occupy well-defined territories.

Habitat

Dry deciduous coastal forests in the Menabe region of western Madagascar, particularly around Kirindy Forest, where sandy soils allow for burrow construction & leaf litter provides foraging opportunities.

Best time

The dry season between April & October is ideal for visiting western Madagascar, with the best photographic opportunities occurring in the first few hours after sunset when the animals are most active.

Approach

Use a red-filtered torch or low-intensity red light to locate & observe the animal without disturbing its natural behaviour, as white light will cause it to flee. Set your camera to a high ISO with a wide aperture to capture sharp images in near-darkness, using a fast shutter speed to freeze movement. Position yourself near known burrow entrances at dusk & remain still & patient, as the animals emerge cautiously & any sudden movement will send them back underground.
