About this species
The giant leaf-tailed gecko is the largest species of the Uroplatus genus, native to Madagascar & several surrounding islands. It is renowned for its extraordinary camouflage, with flattened body edges & skin texture that mimic tree bark with remarkable precision. The species has large, lidless eyes with intricate patterns that aid in nocturnal vision & hunting.
Tropical rainforest in eastern Madagascar & nearby islands, typically found resting vertically on tree trunks & large branches in primary & secondary forest at low to mid elevations.

Photography notes
Photograph at night when the species is most active, using a torch to locate individuals on tree trunks & branches. The dry season between April & October is ideal for visiting Madagascar & increases the chance of sightings.
Use a macro lens to capture the fine detail of the gecko's cryptic skin texture & eye patterns. Avoid direct flash as it can startle the animal & wash out subtle colour detail - use diffused side lighting or a ring flash instead. Move slowly & methodically when positioning your camera, as the species relies on stillness for camouflage & will flee if disturbed.
