Green-backed mantella Photography Holidays

Mantella laevigata

Explore our Green-backed mantella photography holidays in Madagascar, timed so photographers have strong chances to work with this species during the warm and wet season in Madagascar (November to April). Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Green-backed mantella is a small, vibrantly coloured poison frog native to Madagascar, typically reaching around 2.5 cm in length. It is distinguished by its striking green dorsal colouration contrasting with a black underside and bright orange or red markings on the limbs. Like other mantellas, it is diurnal and secretes mild toxins through its skin as a defence mechanism.

Habitat

Humid rainforests of northeastern Madagascar, particularly rocky areas near streams & rivers where bamboo & leaf litter provide cover.

Best time

Daytime hours, particularly mid-morning, during the warm & wet season in Madagascar (November to April) when individuals are most active & visible.

Approach

Use a macro lens to capture the vivid colour patterns & fine skin detail of this small frog. Get low to the ground to shoot at eye level, which creates a more engaging & natural perspective. Work in overcast conditions to avoid harsh shadows & achieve even, flattering light on the subject.
