Species profile

About this species

The Green Honeycreeper is a small, vivid tanager found across tropical Central & South America, including Trinidad. The male is striking with iridescent turquoise-green plumage and a black head, while the female is a more subdued grass-green. They feed primarily on nectar & fruit, often visiting flowering trees in forest canopy.

Habitat

Green Honeycreepers inhabit tropical & subtropical moist lowland forests, forest edges, and gardens with flowering & fruiting trees, typically in the canopy & mid-storey from sea level up to around 1500m elevation.

Best time

Early morning hours are ideal, when birds are most active & feeding. The Trinidad trip in late April (April 2028) coincides with the dry season transition, offering good light conditions & high bird activity at fruiting trees.

Approach

Position yourself near fruiting or flowering trees at forest edges where Green Honeycreepers regularly feed, as this gives clear sightlines without dense obstructing foliage. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze movement as these birds are active & restless feeders. On the Trinidad trip in April, early morning light provides warm, directional illumination that enhances the male's iridescent plumage beautifully.
