Lineated Woodpecker Photography Holidays

Dryocopus lineatus

Explore our Lineated Woodpecker photography holidays in Costa Rica & Trinidad & Tobago, timed so photographers have strong chances to work with this species during the best seasonal conditions. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Lineated Woodpecker is a large woodpecker found across Central & South America, recognisable by its bold black & white striped face and striking red crest. It inhabits forests, woodland edges & plantations, where it forages for insects by excavating large rectangular holes in dead or decaying trees. Its loud, resonant drumming & distinctive call make it one of the more conspicuous woodpeckers in its range.

Habitat

Lineated Woodpeckers are typically found in humid & semi-humid forests, forest edges, open woodland, plantations & areas with scattered large trees, from lowland tropical zones up to moderate elevations across Central & South America.

Best time

Early morning hours after dawn are best, when the birds are most active & the soft light enhances the contrast of their plumage. The dry season across their range tends to offer clearer conditions & more predictable bird activity.

Approach

Position yourself near a tree where the bird has been actively foraging, as it will often return to the same feeding site repeatedly. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the rapid head movements during drumming & chiselling. Patience is essential - remain still & quiet at a reasonable distance to avoid disturbing the bird & allow natural behaviour to continue.

Trips featuring Lineated Woodpecker

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Lineated Woodpecker One of the most visually commanding of Central America’s woodpeckers, the Lineated Woodpecker is a crow-sized picid with a brilliant crimson crest, boldly striped black-&-white plumage, & a resonant hammering call that carries across open woodland. A close relative of North America’s Pileated Woodpecker, it shares that species’ impressive scale & bold presence at the trunk – making it one of the most photogenic woodpecker subjects in the Costa Rica forest portfolio. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographers encounter the Lineated Woodpecker at forest-edge & open-woodland locations across Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands & Pacific slope. The species favours dead & dying palms & large hardwood trees at clearing margins, where it excavates deep nest holes & forages for carpenter ants. At the right location, individuals are remarkably tolerant & can be photographed at close range from a stationary vehicle. Photography Technique & Gear A 300-500mm lens covers most encounters well: the bird often remains at the trunk or a favoured branch for several minutes, allowing composed single frames rather than frantic bursting. Expose for the red crest – the bright crimson can blow out in dappled canopy light – & use spot or partial metering locked to the head. A slightly lower camera angle avoids foreshortening the bird against a blank sky & places the crest against a forest background. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Lineated Woodpecker is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Lineated Woodpecker in Costa Rica & Trinidad & Tobago. During our photography holidays, the Lineated Woodpecker is often photographed alongside White-necked Jacobin, Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, & Collared Aracari. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
