About this species
The Hokkaido Sika Deer is a subspecies of sika deer native to the Japanese island of Hokkaido. It is one of the larger subspecies, with males displaying impressive antlers & a distinctive spotted coat that fades during winter months. The population was once severely reduced due to hunting & harsh winters but has since recovered strongly across the island.
Hokkaido Sika Deer inhabit a range of environments across Hokkaido, including temperate mixed forests, grasslands, wetland edges & alpine meadows. They are commonly found in areas where forest meets open ground, particularly in national parks such as Shiretoko & Daisetsuzan.

Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during autumn rutting season (October to November) offer the best opportunities, as stags are active & vocal. Winter months also provide dramatic imagery with snow-covered landscapes as a backdrop.
Approach slowly & use natural cover to avoid startling the deer, as they are alert to movement & sound. A telephoto lens of 300mm or longer is recommended to capture detailed shots without disturbing their natural behaviour. Early morning light in forested clearings or meadow edges offers excellent opportunities for well-lit, atmospheric compositions.
