Species profile

About this species

The mossy leaf-tailed gecko is a master of camouflage native to the rainforests of Madagascar, capable of blending almost perfectly with lichen-covered tree bark. It possesses a flattened body with a broad, leaf-shaped tail and dermal flaps along its flanks that help eliminate shadows and enhance its disguise. This nocturnal species relies entirely on its remarkable cryptic colouration as its primary defence against predators.

Habitat

Tropical & subtropical moist broadleaf rainforests of eastern & north-western Madagascar, typically found on tree trunks & branches where lichen & moss growth provides ideal camouflage cover.

Best time

Night-time hours are ideal for active behaviour, though the species can be found resting on tree trunks during the day. The wet season between November & April in Madagascar offers the best conditions for locating individuals in rainforest habitats.

Approach

Use a macro lens and position yourself at eye level with the gecko to capture the intricate detail of its skin texture & camouflage patterns. Employ a ring flash or twin flash setup to illuminate fine details without causing harsh shadows on the bark. Move slowly & deliberately when approaching the subject, as sudden movements will cause the gecko to press flat against the surface or flee.
