Species profile

About this species

Oustalet's chameleon is one of the largest chameleon species in the world, native to Madagascar, with adults reaching up to 68 cm in length. It displays a relatively subdued colouration compared to other chameleons, typically showing grey, brown & greenish tones, though it can alter its colour in response to stress or social interaction. The species inhabits a range of environments across Madagascar, from dry forests to degraded habitats near human settlements.

Habitat

Found across a wide range of habitats in Madagascar including dry deciduous forests, scrubland, degraded secondary vegetation & areas close to human settlements, particularly in the central highlands & western regions.

Best time

Early morning hours between 7am & 10am when the animal is warming up & less likely to flee. The dry season from April to October generally offers clearer conditions & more predictable sightings in Madagascar.

Approach

Photograph in the early morning when chameleons are slow-moving & basking, making them easier to approach for close-up shots. Use a macro lens or extension tubes to capture fine scale detail & the distinctive turret-like eyes. A circular polarising filter can help reduce glare from foliage & bring out the subtle colour variations in the skin.
