Ring-tailed vontsira Photography Holidays

Galidia elegans

Explore our Ring-tailed vontsira photography holidays in Madagascar, planned to give photographers proper time with this species during the dry season (April to October). Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The ring-tailed vontsira is a small carnivorous mongoose-like mammal endemic to Madagascar, recognised by its striking chestnut-brown fur and boldly banded black-and-red ringed tail. It inhabits rainforests, dry deciduous forests, and some wetland areas across the island, where it is an agile and active predator of small vertebrates, invertebrates, and fish. It is the most commonly encountered member of the family Eupleridae and is diurnal, making it more accessible to observers than many other Malagasy carnivores.

Habitat

Tropical rainforests, dry deciduous forests, and forest edges near streams & wetlands across Madagascar, from sea level up to around 1,900 metres elevation

Best time

Early morning hours during the dry season (April to October) when the animals are most active & light conditions in the forest are most favourable

Approach

Position yourself near streams or forest edges in the early morning when the species is most active & foraging, allowing natural light to filter through the canopy for a warm, diffuse effect. Use a medium telephoto lens of around 200-400mm to maintain a respectful distance without disturbing the animal, as it can be surprisingly approachable when undisturbed. Focus on capturing the distinctive ringed tail in sharp detail, using a fast shutter speed of at least 1/500s to freeze any sudden movements.
