Scaly ground roller Photography Holidays

Geobiastes squamiger

Species profile

About this species

The Scaly ground roller is a striking, ground-dwelling bird endemic to Madagascar, belonging to the family Brachypteraciidae. It has distinctive scaly patterning on its breast and flanks, with rich rufous-brown upperparts and a stout bill suited for foraging in leaf litter. It is a secretive species found in humid rainforest environments, rarely observed due to its shy, terrestrial behaviour.

Habitat

Dense humid rainforest understorey with deep leaf litter, primarily in lowland & mid-altitude forests of north-eastern Madagascar, particularly around the Masoala Peninsula & Ranomafana National Park.

Best time

Early morning hours between dawn & 9am, during the austral summer months of November to March when breeding activity increases visibility.

Approach

Approach slowly & quietly along forest trails in the early morning when the bird is most active, using a low angle to capture its ground-level perspective. Use a fast lens with a wide aperture to compensate for the low light conditions of the rainforest understorey. Employ a beanbag or ground pod for stability rather than a tripod, which can be cumbersome in dense vegetation.
