It has a slender black bill & a delicate plume of lacy feathers along its back during the breeding season. This active forager is often seen wading in shallow waters, using its bright feet to stir up prey.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon provide the softest light for capturing the white plumage without overexposure. Spring & summer during the breeding season offer the best opportunity to photograph birds displaying their ornate plumes.

Approach

Position yourself at water level to capture reflections & emphasise the egret's graceful form against the water's surface. Shoot in burst mode when the bird is actively foraging or taking flight, as its movements are rapid & unpredictable. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the motion of its plumes & wings in sharp detail.
