Rucervus duvaucelii

Species profile

About this species

The swamp deer, also known as the barasingha, is a large deer species native to the Indian subcontinent, found primarily in India & Nepal. It is characterised by its impressive antlers, which can bear 10 to 14 tines in mature stags, and its preference for wetland & grassland habitats. The species is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss & hunting, with several distinct subspecies occupying different ecological zones.

Habitat

Swamp deer favour tall grasslands, floodplains & marshy wetlands, particularly along river valleys in northern & central India & the Terai region of Nepal.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season between October & March, when deer gather near water sources & grasslands making them easier to locate & photograph in good light.

Approach

Approach slowly & quietly from downwind to avoid startling the deer, using natural cover such as tall grass or tree lines to conceal your position. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detailed portraits without disturbing natural behaviour. Early morning light in open grasslands offers the best conditions for capturing stags with their antlers silhouetted against a golden sky.

Trips featuring Swamp Deer

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Swamp Deer is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Swamp Deer in India. During our photography holidays, the Swamp Deer is often photographed alongside Asian Elephant, Bar-headed Goose, Bengal Tiger, Ganges River Dolphin, Greater Adjutant Stork, & Hog Deer. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year.
