Species profile

About this species

The Tricolored Heron is a medium-sized wading bird found throughout the Americas, recognised by its striking combination of slate-blue, white & chestnut plumage. It has a long, slender neck & bill, well adapted for hunting fish & small aquatic creatures in shallow waters. Despite its relatively slim build compared to other herons, it is an energetic & active forager, often seen darting & lunging at prey.

Habitat

The Tricolored Heron favours shallow coastal & inland wetlands including salt marshes, mangroves, estuaries, mudflats & the edges of lagoons. It is commonly found along the Gulf Coast & Atlantic Coast of North America, as well as throughout Central & South America.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during the breeding season from March to July offer the best light & most active behaviour. Dawn visits to coastal marshes & estuaries are particularly rewarding as birds are most actively feeding at this time.

Approach

Position yourself low to the water to achieve eye-level shots that create a compelling perspective & pleasing background blur. Observe the bird's hunting behaviour before shooting, as anticipating its lunging strikes will help you capture sharp action images. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze movement, particularly when the heron is actively foraging or taking flight.
