Species profile

About this species

The Violaceous Euphonia is a small, vibrantly coloured bird belonging to the finch family, found across much of South America & Trinidad. The male displays striking deep violet-blue upperparts with a bright yellow forehead & underparts, while the female is more subdued with olive-green tones. It is commonly found in forest edges & gardens where mistletoe berries, its primary food source, are abundant.

Habitat

Forest edges, secondary growth, gardens & woodland areas where mistletoe & fruiting trees are present, typically in lowland tropical & subtropical zones including Trinidad & northern South America.

Best time

Early morning light is best for capturing the iridescent plumage. The April departure of the Tropical Birds Of Trinidad trip (April 2028) aligns well with the dry season, when birds are active at forest edges & easier to spot against cleaner vegetation.

Approach

In Trinidad, visit forest edges & gardens early in the morning when euphonias are most active & feeding on mistletoe berries, which also provides natural perches for clean shots. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture the male's vivid violet & yellow plumage without disturbing the bird. Look for fruiting trees & berry clusters where the species regularly returns, allowing you to pre-focus & wait for ideal light angles that reveal the iridescent colouring.
