Species profile

About this species

The White-breasted mesite is a ground-dwelling bird endemic to Madagascar, belonging to the family Mesitornithidae. It is a secretive, rail-like species with a white breast, brown upperparts, and a distinctive pale supercilium. It is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and is rarely seen in the wild.

Habitat

Dense, dry deciduous forests & humid rainforests of Madagascar, particularly in areas with thick leaf litter where the birds forage for invertebrates on the ground.

Best time

Early morning hours shortly after dawn, when the birds are most active foraging on the forest floor. The dry season between May & October offers clearer visibility & more predictable bird movement.

Approach

Approach slowly & quietly through the undergrowth as this species is highly alert to disturbance. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain distance while capturing close detail. Position yourself low to the ground to achieve eye-level shots that convey the bird's natural behaviour.
