About this species

The White-browed owl is a small owl endemic to Madagascar, characterised by its distinctive white eyebrows and spotted brown plumage. It inhabits forested areas across the island and is predominantly nocturnal, feeding on insects, small reptiles & rodents. The species belongs to the family Strigidae & is considered a relatively little-studied owl due to its remote island habitat.

Best time

Dusk & through the night during the dry season between May & October, when forest access is easier & the owls are more active

Approach

Use a torch or red light to locate the owl at night without disturbing its behaviour, then switch to a focused beam for composition. A fast lens with a wide aperture such as f/2.8 is essential for capturing sharp images in low-light forest conditions. Patience is key - locate a regular roost site during the day & return at dusk to capture the owl as it becomes active.
