Our Colombia trips focus on the Andes cloud forest corridor, where the concentration & colour of resident birds – Hummingbirds, Toucans, Tanagers, & specialist endemics – exceeds almost anything else accessible to the wildlife photographer in a single week. The cloud forests of the Western Andes & the Valle del Cauca provide a layered habitat where dozens of hummingbird species compete at flower-rich clearings & dedicated feeders, giving controlled, close-range photography of birds that would be near-impossible to approach in the wild. At the same clearings, multicoloured tanager flocks, Crimson-rumped Toucanets, & the extraordinary Cock-of-the-Rock lekking grounds create a constant stream of photographic subjects from first light to last. Photographic Conditions Colombia’s tropical location means consistent day length year-round; the cloud forest is productive in both dry periods (December through February & June through August). Hummingbird feeder stations suit focal lengths of 200-400mm & fast shutter speeds (1/1250s+) to freeze wingbeats. Forest clearings require higher ISO tolerance in dappled shade; a 100-400mm zoom covering both distant canopy & close feeder work is ideal.
