Alouatta palliata

Explore our Mantled Howler Monkey photography holidays in Costa Rica, planned to give photographers proper time with this species during the best seasonal conditions. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The mantled howler monkey is a large New World monkey found across Central & South America, named for the long guard hairs on its sides that form a distinctive mantle. It is best known for its incredibly loud howling calls, which can be heard up to 5 kilometres away & are used to communicate territory between troops. Adult males are predominantly black while females & juveniles tend to display more brownish colouration.

Habitat

Tropical & subtropical rainforests, deciduous forests, & forest fragments across Central America & north-western South America, including lowland areas & montane forests up to around 2500 metres elevation.

Best time

Early morning between 6am & 9am is ideal, as howler monkeys are most active & vocal at dawn. The dry season, typically December to April in Central America, offers better visibility through the canopy as leaf cover is reduced.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm as these monkeys spend most of their time in the upper forest canopy & are rarely approachable at close range. Position yourself in areas where troops are known to feed during morning hours & be patient, as they move slowly & spend long periods resting in the same trees. Shoot in burst mode when they are vocalising, as the open-mouthed howling posture makes for a dramatic & expressive image.

Trips featuring Mantled Howler Monkey

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Mantled Howler Monkey The Mantled Howler Monkey is the loudest land animal in the Americas – its dawn chorus, a deep, resonant roar amplified by a specialised enlarged hyoid bone, carries for kilometres through the forest canopy & is one of the most atmospheric sounds of the Costa Rican dawn. For photographers, howlers offer something that most primates do not: a large, deliberate, & often entirely stationary subject in the high canopy that allows a measured approach, careful composition, & time to work the light. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographs the Mantled Howler Monkey at forest-edge & interior locations across Costa Rica’s lowlands, where troops of 6-20 animals move predictably through the canopy & often rest in the same grove of large trees for hours. A group found at dawn is frequently still in the same trees at mid-morning, making for extended photographic sessions. Photography Technique & Gear A 300-600mm lens with good close-focus capability covers most howler encounters. The big challenge is the canopy angle – shoot from a position that gives the cleanest sky or foliage background above the animal, rather than a tangle of branches. Overcast bright conditions avoid harsh shadow under brow & beard. Look for backlit shots with the sun rimming the red-tipped mantle fur for an atmospheric highlight effect. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Mantled Howler Monkey is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Mantled Howler Monkey in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Mantled Howler Monkey is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, & Emerald Toucanet. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
