Species profile

About this species

The Marsh Owl is a medium-sized owl found across sub-Saharan Africa & parts of North Africa and Madagascar. It has dark brown upperparts, a pale facial disc with dark eye patches, and relatively small ear tufts compared to other Asio species. It is one of the few owls that is largely crepuscular & nocturnal, favouring open grassland & wetland habitats where it hunts small mammals and insects.

Habitat

The Marsh Owl inhabits open wetlands, flooded grasslands, marshes, & moist savanna areas. It is typically found at lower altitudes near reed beds, damp meadows, & the fringes of lakes or rivers where suitable prey is abundant.

Best time

The best time to photograph the Marsh Owl is during the crepuscular hours of dawn & dusk when it is most active. The dry season in its African range often offers clearer skies & less obscuring vegetation, making sightings more reliable.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture this species from a distance without disturbing its behaviour, as it can be skittish near its nest site. Position yourself low to the ground at the edges of marshes or grasslands during the golden hour to take advantage of warm light & a clean background. Set a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze wing movement when the owl is in flight during its low hunting passes over open ground.
