About this species
Grant's Gazelle is a medium-sized antelope native to the open plains & semi-arid regions of East Africa. It is distinguished by its pale fawn colouring, long ringed horns in both sexes, & a white rump patch that extends above the tail. The species is highly adapted to arid conditions & can survive without water for extended periods by obtaining moisture from vegetation.
Grant's Gazelle inhabits open grasslands, semi-arid scrubland, & savanna plains across East Africa, particularly in Kenya, Tanzania, & South Sudan. It favours areas with short grass & sparse bush cover, often found at higher altitudes than Thomson's Gazelle & tolerating more arid conditions.

Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon light provides the most flattering golden tones for photography. The dry season, typically June to October in East Africa, is ideal as vegetation is sparse & animals gather around water sources, making them easier to locate & photograph.
Approach slowly & use a vehicle as a mobile hide, as gazelles in national parks are often accustomed to safari vehicles and allow closer access. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detailed portraits & behaviour without disturbing the animals. During the dry season, position yourself near waterholes or river crossings where gazelles congregate, offering excellent opportunities for dramatic & intimate shots.
