Species profile

About this species

The North American porcupine is a large rodent covered in thousands of sharp quills that serve as its primary defence against predators. It is the second largest rodent in North America, known for its slow, deliberate movement & nocturnal habits. Porcupines are herbivores, feeding on bark, leaves & conifer needles depending on the season.

Habitat

Porcupines are typically found in coniferous & mixed forests, woodland edges & rocky outcrops across North America. They favour areas with abundant trees, particularly conifers such as spruce & fir, & are also found in shrublands & desert regions in the western parts of their range.

Best time

Dawn & dusk during autumn & winter offer the best opportunities, as porcupines are more active at these times & leafless trees make them easier to spot. Spring is also rewarding when they descend to feed on fresh vegetation.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a safe distance & avoid disturbing the animal. Shoot in low light conditions using a wide aperture to capture detail in the quills whilst keeping a natural background. Look for porcupines in trees during daylight hours as they often rest in the same tree for several days, giving you time to plan your composition.

Trips featuring Porcupine

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Porcupine is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Porcupine in Kenya. During our photography holidays, the Porcupine is often photographed alongside African Civet, African Elephant, African Leopard, African Lion, Bat-eared Fox, & Common Genet.
