About this species

The Spotted Eagle-Owl is a medium-sized owl native to sub-Saharan Africa & parts of the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the most common owl species in Africa & adapts well to a range of environments including urban & suburban areas.

The Spotted Eagle-Owl inhabits a wide range of environments including rocky hillsides, open woodland, savanna, scrubland, & increasingly urban gardens & parks across sub-Saharan Africa.

Best time

Dusk & dawn are the optimal times to photograph this species, as it becomes most active around twilight. The dry season in southern Africa, roughly May to September, offers clearer skies & more predictable behaviour around water sources.

Approach

Position yourself at a low angle during dusk or dawn to capture the owl against a softly lit sky, using a wide aperture to isolate the subject from the background. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/500s to freeze any head movements, as owls frequently turn & tilt their heads. Familiarise yourself with known roosting sites in advance, as returning to the same location increases your chances of finding a relaxed, undisturbed subject.
