It’s not a big-mammal country; it’s a country for photographers who want to slow right down & work small subjects properly. Pui Hang Miles guides all three of our Bulgaria trips, & each itinerary is built around specific known sites rather than general searching.
What makes it work is the density & variety packed into a short trip. A week in the right season turns up dozens of butterfly species across just a few sites, or a comparable spread of snakes, lizards, frogs & toads — the kind of variety that would take a scattergun approach to find anywhere else in Europe.
Each of the three trips targets a genuinely different set of sites & species, tracking the country’s seasons from wetland spring through lowland early summer to mountain midsummer. That progression means a photographer could realistically book all three across a single year & never repeat the same subject twice.

What You’ll Photograph in Bulgaria
Butterflies of the Meadows & Mountains
Bulgaria’s butterfly season runs from lowland meadows in June through to higher mountain sites by July, tracking the flowering season uphill. Knapweed Fritillary, Southern Festoon & Spotted Fritillary lead the early-summer meadow trip, while Apollo, Chequered Skipper & Grizzled Skipper are the targets once the itinerary moves to altitude.
Macro work like this rewards a completely different approach to the wider wildlife photography elsewhere in the series — a steady hand, a dedicated macro lens, & a willingness to get low & close rather than working from a distance with a long lens. Wind is often the biggest practical obstacle, since even a light breeze can move a flower head enough to ruin a tightly framed shot.
Reptiles & Amphibians
The reptiles & amphibians trip covers wetland margins & rocky ground for European Glass Lizard, Smooth Snake & Syrian Spadefoot Toad, with a genuinely broad supporting cast — other lizards, wall lizards, & additional frog & toad species turn up across the week alongside the headline targets. Timing matters enormously with reptiles in particular — most species are only active & visible within a fairly narrow temperature window, cool enough to be out but not so cool that they retreat to cover. Pui Hang’s knowledge of specific basking sites & known territories is what turns a week of searching into a reliably productive trip. Sofia is the usual arrival point for all three trips, with onward road transfers to whichever region the itinerary is centred on that week.
A Country of Microhabitats
What makes Bulgaria so productive for macro photography is the sheer range of microhabitats packed into a relatively small country — damp wetland margins, dry rocky outcrops, lowland hay meadows & alpine slopes all sit within a few hours’ drive of each other. Few European countries offer that range of close-focus subjects without genuinely long transfers between sites.
This also means light & weather can vary considerably between locations on the same trip — a rocky, exposed reptile site behaves very differently to a sheltered woodland butterfly meadow, & Pui Hang plans each day’s itinerary around whichever site is likely to be most productive given the forecast.
When to Visit Bulgaria
The three trips are staggered deliberately through the spring & summer — May for reptiles & amphibians, June for lowland meadow butterflies, & July for the mountain butterfly species that need the season to progress further before they emerge. Booking more than one departure in the same year gives a genuinely complete picture of the country’s small-subject wildlife across a full season.
Working at Macro Distance
Composing at macro distance forces a different discipline than any other trip in the series — depth of field becomes razor-thin at close focusing distances, so decisions about exactly which part of a butterfly’s wing or a lizard’s eye to hold in focus matter enormously. A small aperture helps but costs light, which is where a diffuser or reflector earns its place in the bag.
Patience looks different here too. Rather than waiting for an animal to move into view, macro work is often about waiting for the wind to drop, the light to soften, or a butterfly to settle back onto the same perch after being disturbed — a quieter, more contemplative rhythm than the safari or hide-based trips elsewhere in the series. It is a genuinely meditative way to spend a week of photography. A comfortable kneeling mat is a small addition worth packing too.
Planning Your Trip to Bulgaria
Because these are macro-focused trips, the kit list looks quite different from a safari or hide-based holiday elsewhere in the series — a dedicated macro lens, a sturdy but portable tripod, & a diffused flash or reflector for filling in shadow on a close subject are all worth packing.
Group sizes stay small on all three trips, partly because macro photography is inherently a slower, more individual pursuit than photographing a shared, distant subject like a big cat or an eagle — everyone needs their own time & space at a productive site rather than crowding around a single flower or basking rock.
Days tend to follow the temperature rather than the clock, particularly on the reptile trip, with the most productive windows often falling in mid-morning once the ground has warmed but before the full heat of the day sets in.
