In one week you can be lying on a boardwalk at eye level with a Red-eyed Tree Frog, waiting in a hide for a Resplendent Quetzal to land, & photographing a Three-toed Sloth barely moving in the canopy above you.

The country’s network of protected rainforest & cloud forest means the wildlife is genuinely there, in numbers, & it holds still long enough — or comes back often enough — for you to work a scene properly rather than firing off one lucky frame as it vanishes.
What keeps photographers coming back is the density of subjects. Costa Rica doesn’t ask you to choose between birds, herps, & mammals — a single well-run week gives you all three, often on the same trail. The light under the canopy is soft & forgiving, the trails are well established, & because the country has protected this habitat for decades, the animals are used to quiet, respectful groups moving through on foot.
The country’s warm, humid climate holds steady across most of the year, which is part of why it works so well for a photography trip built around patience rather than a race against the weather. Rain tends to fall in short, predictable bursts rather than washing out a whole day, & the breaks in cloud cover that follow often produce the softest light of the day — exactly the conditions rainforest photography rewards. Between sites, transfers are short enough that you spend your time working locations properly rather than travelling between them.

What You’ll Photograph in Costa Rica
Toucans & Aracaris
Costa Rica’s rainforest is built around big-billed birds that photograph like nothing else — the Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Fiery-billed Aracari, Emerald Toucanet, & Chestnut-mandibled Toucan. These are the signature subjects on Essential Costa Rican Wildlife & Ultimate Costa Rican Wildlife, & see more examples in our Tropical Birds photo archive.
Fruiting trees are the key to working these species well — toucans & aracaris return to the same productive trees repeatedly through the day, which means a guide who knows which tree is fruiting this week matters more than any piece of kit. Early morning light, before the humidity haze builds, gives the cleanest colour on that famous bill.
The Resplendent Quetzal
If one bird defines Costa Rica for photographers, it’s the Resplendent Quetzal — the iridescent green plumage & long tail streamers make it one of the most photographed birds in the Americas, & one of the hardest to get right. Cloud forest light is very different from lowland rainforest — cooler, greyer, & often thinning to mist by mid-morning. Quetzals favour wild avocado trees at this altitude, & the best sessions tend to come early, before the cloud closes in & the light flattens out completely.
Hummingbirds
Costa Rica’s hummingbird diversity is exceptional — Violet Sabrewing, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, & White-necked Jacobin all show up around feeder stations & forest edges, giving you the chance to work flight & hover shots at close range. Feeder stations are set up specifically to bring multiple species into a small, controllable area, which makes them the best place in the country to practise high-speed flight photography without the unpredictability of working a wild perch. A fast shutter & a willingness to shoot a lot of frames both pay off here.
Frogs, Lizards & Snakes
Night walks & boardwalk sessions turn up Red-eyed Tree Frogs, Blue Jeans & Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs, Glass Frogs, Basilisk Lizards, & Green Iguanas — small subjects that reward patient macro & close-up work. These sessions run at a completely different pace to the daytime birding — slow, deliberate, & often on hands & knees with a torch & a macro lens. The reward is composition control most bird photography never allows: you can genuinely choose your background & angle on a subject that isn’t going anywhere fast.
Sloths & Monkeys
Three-toed & Two-toed Sloths move slowly enough to compose properly, while Mantled Howler Monkeys & White-faced Capuchins keep things livelier in the canopy. See more in our Mammals photo archive.
Sloths are genuinely one of the easiest large mammals in the world to compose well, precisely because they barely move — the challenge shifts entirely to finding a clean angle through the canopy & waiting for a gap in the leaves rather than tracking movement.
Rarer Icons
Wildlife Icons of Costa Rica is built specifically around harder-to-find species like the Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, alongside King Vultures, Montezuma & Chestnut-headed Oropendolas, & Hoffmann’s & Lineated Woodpeckers.
When to Visit Costa Rica
Our current departures run from November through May, which lines up with the tail end of the wet season sliding into the dry season — a transition that keeps the forest lush & productive without the heaviest daily downpours of peak wet season. Bird activity around fruiting trees tends to be at its most reliable in this window, & cloud forest visibility for the Resplendent Quetzal is generally at its best before the wetter months return in summer.
