About this species
The Plains Zebra is the most common and widespread of the three zebra species, found across the grasslands & savannahs of eastern & southern Africa. Each individual possesses a unique pattern of black & white stripes, which are thought to aid in camouflage, social bonding & deterring biting insects. They are highly social animals, living in family groups & often forming large herds alongside wildebeest & other grazers.
Plains Zebras inhabit open grasslands, savannahs, scrublands & lightly wooded areas across eastern & southern Africa, from Ethiopia & Sudan down to South Africa. They favour areas near water sources & are commonly found in national parks such as the Serengeti, Masai Mara & Kruger.

The dry season from June to October is ideal, particularly during the Great Migration in East Africa when vast herds gather. Early morning & late afternoon light provides the most flattering conditions for capturing stripe detail & warm tones.
Photograph during the golden hours of early morning & late afternoon when the warm light accentuates the contrast of the black & white stripes beautifully. Position yourself at eye level with the herd when possible, using a vehicle as a hide to avoid disturbing natural behaviour & get closer compositions. Look for interactions such as grooming, sparring & foaling, as these moments of activity add storytelling & depth to your images.
