Species profile

About this species

The spotted hyena is the largest member of the Hyaenidae family & is found across sub-Saharan Africa. It is a highly social & intelligent carnivore, living in groups called clans that can number in the dozens & are led by dominant females. Despite its reputation as a scavenger, the spotted hyena is a skilled hunter responsible for the majority of its own kills.

Habitat

Spotted hyenas occupy a wide range of habitats including open savannahs, grasslands, woodlands, semi-arid regions & even mountainous areas across sub-Saharan Africa, showing a strong preference for areas with abundant prey.

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon year-round, with the dry season between June & October offering the best visibility as vegetation thins out & wildlife concentrates around water sources.

Approach

Shoot during the golden hours of early morning & late afternoon when hyenas are most active & the light is warm & flattering. Position yourself low to the ground to achieve eye-level shots that create a more intimate & compelling perspective. Patience near den sites can reward you with outstanding behavioural shots of cubs & adults interacting.

Trips featuring Spotted Hyena

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Spotted Hyenas The Spotted Hyena is chronically underestimated as a photographic subject, & that reputation is almost entirely wrong. These are the most successful large predators in Africa by biomass – not the scavengers of popular myth, but highly intelligent, socially complex hunters who kill the majority of what they eat & live in female-dominated clan structures with intricate social hierarchies. Photographically, hyenas offer extraordinary raw material: expressive faces, the distinctive sloped silhouette, vigorous interaction between clan members at the den, & the chaos & energy of a clan confrontation over a carcass. At dawn, when golden light rakes across the Mara’s short grass & a hyena stands alert against the brightness, the image is as powerful as anything the savannah produces. Where NaturesLens Takes You Kenya’s Maasai Mara holds large, well-studied hyena clans with known den locations that NaturesLens guides work regularly across all Kenya itineraries. The morning drive – starting before first light to be positioned as the sky brightens – consistently produces hyena encounters on or returning from hunts. During the migration months of July to October, hyenas aggregate around wildebeest crossing points on the Mara River, creating intense competitive feeding situations between hyena clans, lions, & vultures that offer some of the most visceral action photography in Africa. Shompole’s nocturnal waterhole hides produce hyena encounters after dark, when their activity peaks & the relationship between scent, sound, & movement becomes central to the photographic narrative. Photography Technique & Gear Hyenas at dawn & dusk benefit from the same telephoto range as other Mara predators: 400-600mm for working distance, with the option to go wider for group & environmental shots. The hyena’s face has genuinely interesting photographic qualities – the spotted coat, the distinctive slope of the spine, the large rounded ears – & tight portrait shots are as compelling as action sequences. For nocturnal waterhole photography, the technical requirements match those for lion & leopard: fast glass at f/4 or wider, ISO 3200-6400, shutter speed 1/200s or faster for any movement. Hyenas at the waterhole tend to approach more cautiously than lions & often drink quickly before retreating, so timing & patience within a fixed hide position are essential. You can photograph the Spotted Hyena in Kenya & Tanzania. During our photography holidays, the Spotted Hyena is often photographed alongside African Elephant, African Leopard, African Lion, Plains Zebra, Giraffe, & Grant’s Gazelle. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include African wildlife, leopards, lions, photographic safaris based in Africa, wildlife whilst on safari in Africa, & African wildlife by night in Kenya.
