Species profile

About this species

The Cape Buffalo is a large African bovine found across sub-Saharan Africa, known for its imposing size & unpredictable temperament. Adults can weigh up to 900 kg & are characterised by their distinctive fused horn boss, particularly prominent in males. They are highly social animals, forming large herds that provide safety in numbers against predators such as lions.

Habitat

Savanna grasslands, open woodlands, & areas near rivers or waterholes across sub-Saharan Africa, including national parks such as the Serengeti & Kruger

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season (June to October) when herds gather at waterholes, offering excellent visibility & golden light

Approach

Position yourself downwind & at a safe distance, using a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture close detail without disturbing the herd. Focus on the eyes & distinctive horn boss for compelling portraits, shooting at eye level where possible for a more engaging perspective. Early morning light enhances the texture of their dark hides & often coincides with active grazing behaviour near water sources.
