Join David for our Florida Ospreys photography tour, an immersive 10 night wildlife photography holiday exploring some of central Florida’s most productive yet often overlooked photographic locations. This trip is designed around photographing ospreys in action, while also capturing the extraordinary diversity of Florida’s wetland birdlife.
For many photographers, the defining moments of the Florida Ospreys photography tour comes during our mornings & evenings on Blue Cypress Lake, one of the most reliable places in North America to photograph ospreys at the nest at close range. The lake’s open water, low-angle light, & high osprey density create repeated opportunities to photograph dives, chase sequences, & birds returning to their nests. Beyond Blue Cypress, the itinerary ranges from Florida’s east coast to its west, targeting a wide mix of habitats & species, overall the species we have photographed in the past include
Photographic opportunities, at the locations found on this trip, should provide opportunities for capturing images of various species, including Anhinga, Bald Eagle, Black-necked Stilt, Burrowing Owl, Crested Caracara, Double-crested Cormorant, Glossy Ibis, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Limpkin, Little Blue Heron, Osprey, Reddish Egret, Roseate Spoonbill, Sandhill Crane, Snail Kite, Snowy Egret, Tricolored Heron, White Ibis & Wood Stork.
, plus, on some occasions, many more. Locations include St. Augustine, Lake Kissimmee, Blue Cypress Lake, Joe Overstreet Road in Kenansville, Stick Marsh, J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Cape Coral, & additional carefully chosen sites.
We will spend four full mornings & several afternoons photographing from a pontoon boat on Blue Cypress Lake, allowing time to settle into the rhythm of osprey behaviour. This extended access is deliberate, giving you the chance to refine technique, experiment with angles & backgrounds, & build a strong, varied set of osprey images rather than relying on brief encounters.
Later in the trip, we dedicate time to photographing burrowing owls around Cape Coral. David, a member of the NaturesLens guiding team, knows several locations that have consistently produced excellent photographic opportunities, & we revisit these areas to maximise time with the birds & adapt to light & behaviour as conditions change.
Group size on Florida Ospreys is strictly limited to 4 participants, ensuring plenty of one-to-one time with David, space to work from the boat & on land, & guidance tailored to your individual photographic goals.
Florida Ospreys at Blue Cypress Lake
Blue Cypress Lake is widely regarded as one of the finest locations anywhere to photograph ospreys, & it forms the heart of the Florida Ospreys photography tour. The lake supports a large, stable osprey population, with numerous nests positioned along the shoreline & easy access to shallow fishing areas. This combination results in frequent fishing attempts, dramatic plunge dives, & repeat flight paths that photographers can learn & anticipate.
Ospreys are instantly recognisable, with white underparts, dark upper wings, & a bold facial mask. Their long wings & distinctive hovering behaviour make them one of the most engaging birds of prey to photograph. At Blue Cypress Lake, ospreys regularly dive feet-first into the water, emerging with fish clasped in their talons before shaking off droplets & carrying their catch back to nearby nests – often directly overhead.
Their specialised adaptations make these moments possible. Reversible outer toes, roughened foot pads, & sharply curved talons allow ospreys to grip slippery fish with remarkable efficiency. Combined with strong flight muscles & precise timing, this behaviour creates fast, repeatable photographic opportunities that reward anticipation & positioning.
The surrounding cypress-lined shoreline provides both nesting sites & clean, natural backgrounds. Many pairs return to the same nests year after year, reinforcing them & raising their young in full view of the lake. During the breeding season, aerial displays, vocal interactions, & territorial behaviour add further interest, offering a wide range of photographic subjects beyond fishing alone.
As chicks hatch & grow, activity around the nests increases, with adults arriving carrying fish & young birds testing their wings. By late spring, fledglings begin their first flights, adding another dynamic layer to the experience. Throughout the trip, the ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake offer not just dramatic action, but a deeper look into behaviour, family interaction, & life cycle – all within one of Florida’s most photogenic wetland environments.
Together with the broader range of birdlife encountered across the state, Florida Ospreys delivers a varied, fast-paced wildlife photography experience that balances action, repetition, & diversity, giving photographers the time & access needed to come away with a strong, cohesive body of work.
