A wildlife photography holiday, a wildlife photography tour, a photography workshop & a general wildlife tour can all put you in front of the same animals, but they are built for different things. A wildlife photography holiday is a multi-day trip built around photography, staying with a small number of productive locations so you can make better wildlife images. A wildlife photography tour is also built around photography, but moves between several locations for variety. A photography workshop is tuition-led: its main job is teaching a skill, usually over a day or a weekend. A general wildlife tour is built around seeing wildlife & places, with photography fitting in around a wider sightseeing itinerary.
None of these is better than the others in every case. The right one depends on whether you want to learn, to see, or to photograph. This guide sets out the differences plainly so you can choose the format that suits you.

What Is a Wildlife Photography Holiday?
A wildlife photography holiday is a trip that is built around photography from the first planning decision onwards. The destination is chosen for its photographic potential, the dates for the season & the light, & the daily plan for when the animals are active & the conditions are at their best.
In practice that tends to mean:
- Time where the photographs happen. Rather than ticking off locations, the trip stays with productive sites & returns to them as the light, weather & behaviour change.
- Small groups of photographers. Everyone shares the same priorities, so nobody is waiting on the coach for someone to finish shooting, & there is room at the hide window or on the boat rail.
- Experienced photographic guidance in the field. Your leader is an experienced wildlife photographer who knows the subject & can help with positioning, settings, composition & reading behaviour as it happens, without turning the day into a lesson.
- Logistics taken care of. Accommodation, ground transport, permits, hides & local specialists are arranged so that your attention stays on the wildlife.
Learning happens on a good photography holiday, but it happens alongside making images rather than instead of it. Most people come home with a stronger portfolio & a better understanding of why those images worked.
Some of our most popular wildlife photography holidays:
- Pelicans of Lake Kerkini
- Wildlife of Białowieża Forest
- Atlantic Puffins of Fair Isle
- Eagles of the Hortobágy
- Iberian Lynx in Summer
- Northern Sweden’s Eagles in Winter
What Is a Photography Workshop?
A photography workshop is primarily a teaching format. It is usually short, focused on one skill & structured around a lesson plan: flight photography, using a specific hide, macro technique, editing workflow & so on. There may be a classroom element, a demonstration & then practical time.
Workshops are useful when you know exactly what you want to learn & want concentrated instruction. They are also a low-commitment way to try a type of photography before travelling further for it. The trade-off is time: a single session gives you one set of conditions, & there is little room to wait for the light or return when an animal behaves differently.
What Is a Wildlife Photography Tour?
A wildlife photography tour is built around photography in the same way as a photography holiday, but it is designed for variety. Rather than staying with one area, the trip moves between several locations, habitats & subjects within a single journey, so you come home with a broader range of species & settings.
The group is still small & made up of photographers, the timings are still set by the light & the wildlife, & you are still guided in the field by experienced wildlife photographers. The trade-off is depth: more time is spent travelling between sites, & there are fewer chances to return to the same subject as conditions change. If one species or place is the priority, a photography holiday usually suits better. If you want to see how much a region can offer, a photography tour is the better fit.
A wildlife photography tour is not the same as a general wildlife tour. General wildlife tours are built around seeing wildlife & places, often with larger groups of birders, naturalists & travellers with mixed interests. That makes them an excellent way to see a lot, but the itinerary rarely bends to the light, stops are timed for the whole group & midday visits are common.
Some of our most popular wildlife photography tours:
- Winter Wildlife of Arctic Varanger
- Wildlife Icons of Costa Rica
- Brown Bears of Finland
- Japanese Wildlife in Winter
- Fennec Foxes & other Moroccan Wildlife
You can compare the formats in more detail on our types of wildlife photography trips page.
Where Do the Lines Blur?
The labels are not used consistently. Some operators sell multi-day “workshops” that are really trips with extra teaching. Some general tour companies add “photography” to a sightseeing itinerary without changing the pace, the group size or the timings. & “photo tour” can mean almost anything.
So it is worth looking past the name & asking what the trip is actually built around. If the daily plan, the group size & the time at each location all serve the photography, it is a photography holiday or photography tour whatever it is called.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose a workshop if you want to learn a particular technique, you are short on time, or you want to try a new type of photography before committing to a longer trip.
- Choose a general wildlife tour if seeing as many species & places as possible matters more than the images, or if you are travelling with someone who does not photograph.
- Choose a wildlife photography tour if you want strong images across a range of species & habitats in one trip.
- Choose a wildlife photography holiday if your aim is strong images of specific wildlife, you want time to work with conditions rather than rush past them, & you want to travel with people who share that aim.
Many photographers use several of these at different stages. A workshop can build a skill that a photography holiday then gives you days to put into practice.
Where Does NaturesLens Fit?
NaturesLens is a UK-based wildlife photography specialist. We run wildlife photography holidays & tours worldwide, & we have done since 2013. We are not a photography course or a tuition-led workshop provider, & we are not a general sightseeing tour operator.
Every NaturesLens trip is photography-first. Itineraries are built around photography: the light, the seasons, animal behaviour & access to the right locations. What that looks like on a trip:
- Small groups, typically 4 – 7 photographers, so everyone gets space, time & attention.
- Experienced photographic guidance in the field from experienced wildlife photographers who know the subjects & the locations.
- Single occupancy included on virtually all trips, with no single supplement, so you have your own room to rest, back up & review images.
- Itineraries planned around the photography rather than a sightseeing checklist. You can read more on how NaturesLens wildlife photography holidays are built.
- Financial protection for customer money.
Advice on settings, fieldcraft & composition is part of every trip, but it is given in the field, when it helps you make the image in front of you, rather than as a set curriculum. Photographers of all levels travel with us, from people on their first trip to professionals.
What Should You Ask Before Booking Any Wildlife Photography Trip?
Whatever a trip is called, these questions will tell you what it is really built around:
- How many people are in the group, & are they all photographers?
- Who leads it, & are they an experienced wildlife photographer who knows this location?
- How long do you spend at each site, & do you return to the best ones?
- Are the daily timings set by the light & the wildlife, or by the itinerary?
- Is single occupancy included, or is there a single supplement?
- Is the trip mainly teaching, mainly sightseeing, or mainly photography?
If the answers point to photography every time, you are looking at a wildlife photography holiday or tour.
