Both experiences offer a visual palette that is unlike anything in temperate Europe or Africa – deep snow, frozen river ice, boreal spruce, & the cold blue light of a northern winter combine with charismatic large mammals to produce images of unmistakeable atmosphere. Photographic Conditions Both Canada trips run in winter (December through February), when snow cover is deep & mammals are active at predictable locations near thermal or food resources. Low winter sun creates long shadows & warm raking light even at midday. ISO performance matters in low-light dawn sessions; 400-600mm covers most wolf & bear distances; a 70-200mm is useful for environmental portraits in wider snow landscapes.
