Best time

Late spring to early summer - particularly May & June - offers the best opportunities, as snakes are highly active after emerging from hibernation. Warm sunny mornings between 9am & midday are ideal, when individuals are basking to raise their body temperature.

Approach

Approach slowly & carefully on warm mornings when the snake is basking & less alert, keeping a low profile to avoid startling it. Use a telephoto lens of at least 100mm to maintain a respectful distance while still capturing fine scale detail & colour. Look for individuals on sun-warmed rocks, logs or open ground near woodland edges, as these predictable basking spots allow you to pre-position yourself & compose your shot in advance.
