About this species
The Blotched Snake, also known as the Blotched Ratsnake, is a large, non-venomous colubrid snake native to parts of eastern Europe & western Asia. It features a distinctive pattern of dark brown or black blotches along a pale grey or yellowish body, providing excellent camouflage in its natural surroundings. This species is a capable climber & is known to prey on small mammals, birds, & lizards.
Rocky hillsides, scrubland, forest edges, & agricultural areas with stone walls or rocky outcrops across eastern Europe & the Caucasus region. Often found in dry, warm environments with good sun exposure & nearby cover such as bushes or rock crevices.

Photography notes
Spring & early summer mornings, particularly April to June, when snakes are actively basking after cooler nights. Mid-morning between 8am & 11am is ideal as the snake will be warming itself in exposed sunny spots.
Approach slowly & low to the ground to avoid startling the snake, as sudden movements will cause it to retreat quickly. Use a macro or short telephoto lens in the 100-200mm range to capture detailed scale patterns whilst maintaining a respectful distance. Early morning light provides warm, soft tones that complement the snake's earthy colouration & the snake is more likely to be basking & less active at this time.
