About this species
The Reddish Whip Snake is a slender, fast-moving elapid snake native to northern Australia, particularly found across Queensland & the Northern Territory. It displays a reddish-brown to coppery colouration along its dorsal surface, with a distinctively narrow head & large eyes suited to its diurnal hunting lifestyle. It feeds primarily on small lizards & is known for its quick, agile movements through open terrain.
Open woodland, grassland, & savanna environments across northern Australia, often found in areas with scattered rocks, leaf litter, & dry sandy soils that support populations of small lizards.

Mid-morning hours during the warmer months of October through March, when the snake is active & basking or hunting in open areas with good natural light.
Approach slowly & from a low angle to avoid startling the snake, as it is extremely fast & will flee quickly if disturbed. Use a telephoto or macro lens to maintain a safe distance whilst still achieving close, detailed shots of the scales & eye. Shoot in burst mode to capture the snake mid-movement, as even a brief pause can result in a sharp, dynamic image.
