About this species
The Leopard Snake is a slender, beautifully patterned colubrid native to southern Europe & the eastern Mediterranean region. It displays striking reddish-brown blotches edged in black on a pale grey or yellowish background, resembling the markings of a leopard. It is a non-venomous species that is generally shy & secretive, often sheltering beneath rocks or in dense vegetation.
Rocky hillsides, dry scrubland, stone walls, olive groves & the edges of woodland across southern Europe & the Balkans, typically in areas with abundant rocky cover & sparse vegetation

Spring & early autumn are ideal, particularly warm mornings when the snake basks in sunlight to raise its body temperature. Mid-morning light between 8am & 11am offers the best combination of soft illumination & active snake behaviour.
Approach slowly & quietly, keeping a low profile to avoid startling the snake into retreat. Use a macro lens or a telephoto lens to capture fine scale detail & pattern without disturbing the animal. Photograph in soft, diffused light to reduce harsh shadows & bring out the rich colouration of the skin.
