Species profile

About this species

The Sand Boa is a stout, burrowing snake native to the arid regions of South Asia & the Middle East, known for its smooth, cylindrical body adapted for life beneath loose soil & sand. It has a blunt tail & small eyes positioned near the top of its head, which aids in its subterranean lifestyle. This non-venomous species is a constrictor, feeding primarily on small mammals & lizards.

Habitat

Dry sandy plains, scrubland, rocky desert margins & agricultural land across South Asia & parts of the Middle East, where loose soil allows burrowing

Best time

Early morning or late afternoon during the warmer months of spring & summer, when Sand Boas are most likely to emerge from their burrows to bask or hunt

Approach

Photograph Sand Boas during the cooler parts of the day when they are most likely to be active on the surface, using a macro or short telephoto lens to capture fine scale detail without disturbing the snake. Position yourself at ground level to achieve an intimate perspective that emphasises the snake's natural environment & textured scales. Use a diffused flash or natural side-lighting to bring out the rich colour & pattern of the skin without creating harsh reflections.
