Species profile

About this species

The Large Whip Snake is a slender, fast-moving colubrid snake found across the western Mediterranean region, including the Iberian Peninsula & North Africa. It typically reaches lengths of 1.5 to 2 metres & is characterised by its distinctive patterning of dark spots or blotches on a lighter brown or olive background. It is a non-venomous species that relies on speed & agility to pursue lizards & small mammals.

Habitat

Rocky hillsides, scrubland, dry stone walls, olive groves & open woodland across the western Mediterranean basin, particularly in areas with plenty of sun-exposed rock & dense low vegetation for cover

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Spring & early summer mornings, particularly between April & June, when the snake is most active & frequently found basking on rocky outcrops & stone walls

Approach

Approach slowly & from a low angle to avoid startling the snake, as it is extremely fast & will flee at the slightest disturbance. Use a telephoto lens of at least 200mm to maintain a safe working distance while still achieving frame-filling shots. Early morning is ideal as the snake will be basking & less alert, giving you more time to compose your shot before it moves off.
