About this species
Dahl's Whip Snake is a slender, fast-moving colubrid snake found across parts of southeastern Europe & western Asia. It typically reaches 80-100 cm in length & is characterised by its large eyes, slender body, & distinctive spotted patterning along its sides. The species is non-venomous & relies on speed & agility to escape predators & catch prey such as lizards & small invertebrates.
Rocky hillsides, dry scrubland, open woodland edges, & stone walls in warm Mediterranean & semi-arid environments with sparse vegetation & plenty of sun-exposed surfaces for basking.

Spring & early summer mornings (April to June) when individuals are most active basking in warm sunshine, typically between 08:00 & 11:00 local time.
Approach slowly & carefully in the early morning when the snake is basking & less alert, as any sudden movement will cause it to flee rapidly. Use a telephoto or macro lens to maintain distance while achieving a tight, detailed composition of the head & eye. Position yourself at ground level to capture a natural perspective & ensure the background habitat is represented in the frame.
