About this species
The Montpellier Snake is one of the largest snakes found in Europe, capable of reaching lengths of up to 2 metres. It is a slender, fast-moving species with large eyes & a distinctive ridge above them, giving it a frowning appearance. Found across the Mediterranean region, it is mildly venomous but poses little threat to humans as its fangs are located at the rear of the mouth.

Spring & early summer mornings, particularly between April & June, when snakes are actively basking after cooler nights & are most visible in open habitat
Approach slowly & from a low angle to avoid startling the snake, as it is extremely alert & will flee quickly when disturbed. Use a telephoto lens of at least 200mm to capture close-up detail without encroaching on the snake's personal space. Focus on the distinctive large eyes & head profile, which are the most characterful features of this species.
