Florida occupies the southeastern extremity of the United States, a low-lying peninsula bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east & the Gulf of Mexico to the west. Its interior is defined by an intricate mosaic of freshwater marshes, cypress swamps, slow-moving rivers, & shallow lakes, most famously expressed in the Everglades, while coastal fringes offer mangrove estuaries, tidal flats, & brackish lagoons. This subtropical climate & abundance of wetland habitat make the state one of North America's premier destinations for wading birds & other water-associated wildlife, with prairies & open grassland patches adding further habitat diversity.

Wading birds dominate the scene, with Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, & Reddish Egret all frequenting the shallows alongside White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, & the striking Roseate Spoonbill, whose pink plumage & spatulate bill make it a photographic highlight. Wood Stork & Limpkin forage in similar marshy terrain, while Anhinga & Double-crested Cormorant are often seen drying outstretched wings after diving for fish. Birds of prey are well represented too, including Osprey & Bald Eagle patrolling waterways, the wetland-specialist Snail Kite, & the open-country Crested Caracara. Black-necked Stilt favour exposed mudflats, Sandhill Crane graze open grassland, & Burrowing Owl occupy dry, sandy scrub, together illustrating Florida's remarkable breadth of habitat-specific bird life.
