About this species
The Snake-eyed Lacertid is a slender, small lizard found across parts of southern Europe, the Middle East & Central Asia. It takes its common name from its large, undivided, snake-like eye scales, which give it a distinctive appearance compared to other lacertids. It is an agile, fast-moving reptile that inhabits dry, open landscapes & is well adapted to arid conditions.
Dry, open scrubland, rocky hillsides, stony grasslands & semi-arid plains across southeastern Europe, Turkey, the Middle East & Central Asia.

Spring & early summer mornings, typically between 08:00 & 11:00, when lizards are actively basking to raise their body temperature after cool nights.
Approach the lizard slowly & low to the ground during the cooler morning hours when it is less alert & basking in the open. Use a macro lens or telephoto lens to capture fine detail of the distinctive snake-like eye scales without disturbing the animal. Position yourself with the sun behind you to ensure even lighting on the lizard's patterned scales & avoid casting a shadow that may startle it.
