Best time

Spring & early summer mornings are ideal, when tortoises are most active as they warm up after cool nights. The hours between 8am & 11am offer warm, soft light & peak behavioural activity before midday heat drives them to shade.

Approach

Approach slowly & keep a low profile by crouching or lying on the ground to achieve eye-level shots that convey the tortoise's perspective & scale. Use a wide aperture to separate the animal from its background, focussing carefully on the eyes for a compelling portrait. Shoot in soft, directional light to bring out the intricate texture & colour patterns of the carapace without harsh shadows.
