About this species
The Worm Snake, also known as the Smooth Snake, is a small, slender non-venomous snake native to Europe, including Bulgaria. It typically reaches 60-70 cm in length and displays a greyish or brownish colouration with darker spots or streaks along its dorsal surface. It is a secretive and docile species, often found beneath rocks, logs, or in dense vegetation.
Dry, warm habitats such as heathland, open woodland edges, rocky hillsides & scrubby grassland, often where suitable refugia like flat stones or woody debris are present.

Late morning to early afternoon on warm spring days is ideal, as snakes bask to thermoregulate after cool nights. The May trip to Bulgaria (20270512) aligns well with peak activity during spring emergence, making it an excellent time to encounter this species.
Search beneath flat rocks, logs & debris in warm, sunny areas as Worm Snakes are highly secretive and rarely seen in the open. Use a macro lens or close-focus wide-angle lens to capture fine scale detail and environmental context in a single frame. Photograph gently and quickly after discovery, keeping disturbance minimal and replacing cover objects carefully after the encounter.
